    Vermicompost Unit

Vermicompost Unit Formation in Vidyalaya has been initiated.
Setting up a vermicompost unit in the Vidyalaya offers an excellent opportunity to promote eco-friendly practices, teach students about waste management, and encourage sustainable agriculture.

For this purpose following Steps has been taken:

    Site Selection:

We choose a shaded, well-drained area in the school premises. Also ensure it is protected from direct sunlight and heavy rains.
Construction of Vermicompost Bed: Then we create a pit or raised bed (about 1 meter wide, 0.3 meters deep, and 3 meters long)and line the bed with bricks or bamboo to prevent worm escape.

    Layering:

Then we start with a 5-10 cm layer of coconut husk or coarse materials to provide aeration. Add organic waste like vegetable scraps, dried leaves, and cow dung in layers.

    Adding Earthworms:

Then we introduce red wigglers (Eisenia fetida) or other composting worms. Use around 1 kg of worms for every 100 kg of organic waste.

    Maintenance:

Then we keep the unit moist by sprinkling water regularly but avoid overwatering. Turn the material lightly every 2-3 weeks.

    Harvesting Compost:

After 45-60 days, dark, crumbly vermicompost will be ready for harvesting. Separate the worms and reuse them for the next batch.

    Benefits of Vermicompost Unit :

    • It reduces organic waste.
    • It provides nutrient-rich compost for school gardens.
    • It promotes environmental awareness and hands-on learning for students.
    • By integrating vermicomposting into school activities, students develop responsibility towards the environment and practical skills that can be applied in their communities.
